Functional Medicine

Functional Medicine Tree

From a patient who had previously been diagnosed with fibromyalgia -

"Since the treatment program, I have been able to hike and bike with my family (which I could not do before). I have gotten my health back! I no longer have to cancel plans with people I love because of pain. I no longer have to wrap myself in a heating blanket to get a bit of pain relief. I was told that I would just have to deal with it forever and nothing could be done to help the pain other than prescription medications (which would just mask the underlying gut issue that no other doctor had thought to check!). No one deserves to have their life taken away from them because of pain. And by the way, I am finally pregnant! Thank you SO much!

What is functional medicine? It's getting to the root of the problem, unlike much of conventional medicine (often covering symptoms - like WHY do you have the headache, WHY do you have the stomach issues, WHY do you have an autoimmune disease). If you are motivated to take an active role in your healing process, read further! Dr. Halterman has had years of working with nutrition issues in her patient base and has finished Kresser Institute's ADAPT training program (with Chris Kresser, L.Ac as the director).

Dr. Halterman has had personal experience with how well functional medicine can work. She was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, sarcoidosis, not long after a severe life stressor. Using a functional approach, to date, she has been able to keep the sarcoidosis in check without harsh medications. To work with autoimmune problems, as well as hormone imbalances or general inflammatory conditions, she uses a functional approach, taking into consideration important factors such transitioning to a nutrient dense diet, exercise, stress and sleep management. A majority of today's chronic illnesses and pain can be tied to one or all of the following:

  • Inflammation
  • Circadian dysruption
  • Food intolerances
  • Nutrient imbalances and deficiencies
  • Gut pathology such as small intestinal bowel overgrowth (SIBO), dysbiosis or infections
  • Chronic stress
  • Lack of social support
  • Lack of physical activity (or too much physical activity)
  • Chronic infections
  • Toxic burden from heavy metals, mold, or other biotoxins

Dr. Halterman investigates these areas to see which are possible triggers to your problem. This involves working with you to investigate the triggers and lifestyle factors that can contribute to many chronic diseases, as well as to go over your health concerns and goals for the present and future. The process starts off with the case review process - it includes two steps:

1. Step 1 - Initial evaluation/consultation - 30 minutes - $100

  • Initial phone/Skype consultation focusing on your top three health concerns
  • Health evaluation forms
  • Body systems assessment
  • Review of current lifestyle/diet practices
  • Determintation of which tests will be appropriate for you
  • If applicable, a 30 day reset diet to jump start your return to health

If we determine that this approach is workable for you, tests will be ordered based on your individual health needs. The labs are very important, as Dr. Halterman bases her treatment on the 'test, don't guess' motto. This being said, she prioritizes the tests for your particular condition to minimize the total costs. The fees for labs vary (an can range from $550-1300). They may include -

  • Comprehensive blood chemistry panel (which is often be covered by insurance)
  • Advanced stool testing to check for parasites, fungal overgrowth, bacterial imbalance
  • Urine organics testing to check for neurotransmitter imbalance, problems with fat or carbohydrate metabolism, vitamin deficiencies, detoxification problems or issues with oxidative stress
  • Breath testing to screen for SIBO (small intestinal bowel overgrowth)
  • Urine hormone testing to screen for adrenal and sex hormone status

Once Step 1 is completed, you will be given an extensive health history to fill out. This takes quite a bit of time, but is very important to help Dr. Halterman adequately analyze your health status. Once the labs are completed, paperwork is done and diet reset completed (minimum of 30 days), Step 2 can be scheduled.

2. Step 2 - The Case Review - 60 minutes $200

  • In office appointment
  • Review of paperwork, health history and labwork
  • Forumulation of treatment plan, which includes recommendations on diet, supplementation and lifestyle modifications
  • Any additional testing and/or follow up testing will be scheduled

Afterwards, the frequency of follow up visits will depend on the severity of your condition and how well you respond to the treatment program. Follow up visits can be either phone or in-office

  • 30 min. - $75
  • 45 min. - $90
